The name is Rebecca Chambers, but that's Officer Chambers to you!

Rebecca Chambers was a rookie member of the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team, with experience in the field of biochemistry. She was the sole survivor of the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team after the events of July, 1998, and is also one of the four former S.T.A.R.S. members still alive (the others being Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Barry Burton).[5][notes 1]

Background

A gifted girl, Rebecca graduated from university at the young age of 18.[6] Her expertise in chemistry and medicine earned her a position in S.T.A.R.S., a Raccoon City Police Department branch handling specialist cases. She was assigned as Rear Security (RS) and Medic for the Bravo team.[6] She became the unit's youngest and most inexperienced member, which made her quite nervous around her teammates.[6] Because of this, she was eager to please and has been known to take on any task assigned to her without hesitation.[6]

First mission

My first mission and I've already disobeyed orders. So much for my great law enforcement career.

On July 23, 1998, Rebecca was sent in to the Arklay Mountains on her first case to investigate a series of cannibalistic homicides. Bravo team's helicopter broke down over the Raccoon Forest, and an emergency landing was made. The team did not know that this was intentional.[notes 2] During Bravo team's search around the area, they discovered the wreckage of a military police van and found the corpses of the driver and guard, along with the document of a prisoner: Billy Coen, who was being transported to a military base for execution.[7]

Upon further investigation of the area, Rebecca split from the group and discovered the Umbrella Corporation's private company train, the Ecliptic Express.[7] Within the train, Rebecca immediately encountered the passengers, who had already succumbed to the t-virus infection and turned into zombies as a result of an earlier attack.[7] Rebecca was able to defend herself for a while, and eventually came across the fugitive, Billy Coen. After witnessing the death of Bravo team member Edward Dewey, as well as the appearance of Cerberus, Rebecca and Billy made a temporary alliance and teamed up.[8]

The train began to move again, due to the dexterous manipulations of Umbrella operatives already sent by Albert Wesker and William Birkin.[9] Securing the control cabin, the train was sped up to reach Umbrella's former training facility within ten minutes.[9] The team was attacked by mutated leeches, who had adopted a hive-mind.[9] Rebecca and Billy managed to reach the cabin after finding the keycard hidden in a briefcase.[10]

Finding the controls locked, Billy realized that the train's controls were damaged while speeding up, meaning that it would derail and crash; killing them, if they don't use the train's emergency brakes.[10] Rebecca ran to the rear of the train to activate the emergency brake controls on that side, while Billy stayed in the cabin to operate the brake controls in there.[10] On her way, she discovered Edward, now reanimated as a Zombie.[11] Unable to stop him walking towards her hungry for flesh, Rebecca was forced to kill him.[11]

Rebecca and Billy finally activated the emergency brakes, but it was too late to stop the train.[12] The train exploded through a tunnel into the Training facility's station, impacting on the track's buffers and its carriages hurled across the room.[12] Despite the odds, the two survived the crash in good condition.[12]

Now on new ground, the two explored the expansive mansion and its laboratory, uncovering brief dark moments in the facility's history, such as the use of Bio-organic weapons,[13] the director's developing insanity,[14] and the growing rivalry between two employees, one of whom was suspiciously named Albert Wesker, the head of S.T.A.R.S.[15]

Searching for Billy

The two would find trouble several times, however, leading to Rebecca being attacked by an enormous centipede,[16] and nearly falling to her death after being attacked by a monkey.[17] The two soon uncovered further 'dark' deeds, such as human experimentation.[13][18]

After starting up an underground gondola, Billy pushed Rebecca out of the way of an attacking Eliminator, the two falling down into the waters below.[10] On her own, Rebecca made it to the other side, where she found Captain Enrico.[19] Telling him about losing Billy, Enrico agrees to let her look for him, as long as she be careful.[19] After this, he heads back to his team's meeting point.[19]

On her way to an elevator, the steel shutter behind her closed, and a monster attacked from behind the rubble.[20] Defeating the beast, she went down the elevator and found Billy in the water below.[citation needed] After activating the facility's dam, the two found each other, but to their horror, the bones of many people used in the director's experiments had been thrown around where they were standing.[21] Determined to get out of the place alive, the two fought insurmountable odds before reaching the exit.[22] There, they found the director, James Marcus, unusually youthful looking for an elderly man.[23]

The doctor explained to them that his gruesome death at the hands of Umbrella and with his trusting students Albert and William, and his rebirth from his leeches, he is the man who spread the t-virus.[23] The doctor suddenly began to vomit out leeches before mutating into a sickening Leech-like foe.[23]

Although he seemed impervious to firearms, Rebecca and Billy quickly discovered that Marcus was vulnerable to sunlight.[24]. Billy baited Marcus, while Rebecca was opening the roof hatch eventually exposing Marcus to the light of day.[24] Rebecca tossed Billy a Magnum, who fired at the creature in its weakened state, killing it.[25] The monster plummeted down a cargo elevator shaft, while flames went up as the facility's auto-destruct timer ended.[25] The two escaped just before the training facility/mansion exploded.[25] Rebecca took Billy's Dog Tag, a symbol of a soldier's death, to give Billy a chance of freedom. Afterwards, Billy walked into the trees, never to be seen again.[25] Looking down the cliff edge, Rebecca noticed another mansion; which she remembered Enrico having told her about.

Rebecca During the Mansion Incident

Rebecca reached the mansion later that morning, only to find no one there.[26] Tired from her experiences of the previous night, she fell asleep in one of the servant residence's bedrooms, where she was awoken by fellow Bravo team member Richard Aiken.[26]

The two searched the grounds for Marini, whom they relied on for safety after the team split up.[26] However, due to a heightened amount of Web Spinners, the two were forced to abort the search of the grounds and went into the mansion, unaware that their captain would soon come into the dark tunnels near the spider's den.[26] While in the attic, Richard was attacked by a poisonous snake.[notes 3].

Help arrives

Alpha team was sent to rescue Bravo team,[27] and Rebecca was found by Alpha team member Chris Redfield, whose team faced a similar problem to the Bravos. Richard would give Chris his radio so he could call for help, not knowing that it was broken.[notes 4]

Eventually, the two uncovered that the Alpha team leader; Albert Wesker, was the one who masterminded the deaths of several S.T.A.R.S. members and was personally responsible for Enrico Marini's assassination. She was shot by him, but she survived due to her bulletproof vest.

After awakening the monstrous Tyrant T-002, Wesker was swiftly impaled by its claws, dying temporarily. After escaping it, Chris and Rebecca, along with Alpha team members Jill Valentine and Barry Burton, headed up for the heliport after the Mansion's auto-destruct was activated.[28]

The creature would heal from its wounds and attack the surviving S.T.A.R.S. mercilessly.[29] Luckily, Alpha team's pilot; Brad Vickers, flew over and dropped a Rocket launcher to be used on the monster.[29] After the beast was eradicated by the explosive missile, the four escaped with Brad back home.[30]

Upon her return to civilization, Rebecca wrote a police report detailing Billy Coen's "death".[31] What happened to her after that is unknown, but it is evident she returned to society outside of Raccoon City following its demise.

Wardrobe

In the original Resident Evil, Rebecca is seen wearing her S.T.A.R.S. uniform, a green t-shirt and pants with a white bulletproof vest. The red cross symbol is printed on the back of her vest to indicate that she is a medic. She also wears black, fingerless gloves and boots. She also wore a red headband and white earrings, which had been omitted in the remake and Resident Evil 0.

In the Arranged Mode featured in Resident Evil: Director's Cut, she wore a streamlined, burgundy-colored version of her uniform, which consisted of shorts and a T-shirt. In the Resident Evil remake, her alternate costume is a cowgirl outfit consisting of a brown cowboy vest, boots and jeans shorts. This costume was carried over to Resident Evil Zero along with another alternate costume consisting of leather pants and a halter top with long fingerless gloves. In Resident Evil: Deadly Silence for the Nintendo DS she had an alternate costume which is a cheerleader uniform.

The Mercenaries

Rebecca is a playable character in Mercenaries Reunion mode for Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition. Her updated character model has the same outfit from Resident Evil 0, with the exception of two spray bottles on her belt (which she is able to use), different gloves and minus symbols instead of crosses on her back vest and pack. One of these bottles contains tear spray to stun enemies, while the other contains a flammable spray used to set enemies on fire. Unfortunately, unlike most other characters, most of Rebecca's melee attacks do not instantly kill, and require more shots to kill with a melee.

Rebecca seems to be the most "weakhearted" of the mercenaries, sometimes loudly saying "Oh no!" when using her flame spray attack of Majini. This reaction to apparent violence still could be contributed to her relatively young age (18) compared to the other characters, because in her last chronological appearence she was around 18 years old and in the correct Resident Evil canon she would be around 28 at the current time.

Position Attack Strength
Head Flame Spray High
Arm (Front) Tear Gas Low
Arm (Front) (With Excella or Chris) Double Flame Spray High
Arm (Back) Rump Shake Low
Leg (Front) Jump Hit Low
Leg (Back) Head Cracker Medium

She carries only two weapons:

  1. The Heckler & Koch MP5 machine gun with 120 loaded shots (and 300 machine gun ammo on backup); and
  2. The Jail Breaker shotgun with 10 loaded shots(and 60 shotgun shells on

In other media

George A. Romero's unproduced script

Rebecca also appears in George A. Romero's unproduced script based on the first game, filling the same role as she did in the game, meaning she was a medic of S.T.A.R.S.

Novels

Rebecca also played an important role in the S.D. Perry series of novella. She has appeared in the following:

Resident Evil: The Deck Building Game

Rebecca appears as a character card in the Resident Evil DBG.

Ch010

She is an interesting character that takes advantage of trashing cards from the player's hand or inventory/deck. Her Level 1 ability allows her take cards she is trashing through effects of other cards and place them in other player's discard piles. To further benefit this ability, her Level 2 effect allows her to simply trash cards whenever the player pleases. These effects come in handy when facing players using characters such as Krauser or Leon, who depend on smaller decks of one type of weapon. Rebecca has the lowest health out of all the characters in the base set (alongside Claire,Ada and Sheva) and can be killed instantly by Uroboros Aheri if she isn't careful.

Trivia

  • Rebecca's overall appearance in RE0 was modeled after popstar Ayumi Hamasaki, who was the official spokeswoman for Biohazard 0 in Japan.
  • Rebecca is the sole survivor of S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team.
  • In Resident Evil 2, if you check the S.T.A.R.S. group photo in the RPD S.T.A.R.S. office, Rebecca is missing. This is because she wasn't hired when the group photo was taken.
  • Rebecca can play the piano, [notes 5] though is not as skilled as Jill Valentine or Billy Coen.[notes 6]
  • The BioHazard Archives lists her as deceased after the Raccoon City Outbreak, though this was considered one of the Archive's many mistakes. Her status was confirmed in the History files in Resident Evil 5, where she is listed as being one of the surviving members of S.T.A.R.S.
  • Rebecca is the only character who carries 2 healing items in her inventory in either Mercenaries mode.
  • Even though Rebecca is wearing her costume from the Resident Evil remake, she does not have a Bullet Proof vest in her inventory in the Mercenaries Reunion.
  • In Resident Evil 2, when you walk into the S.T.A.R.S. office, search the desk at the head of the room about Fifty Times, you will uncover a film, that when developed, shows a picture of Rebecca in a Basketball Uniform.
  • Rebecca Chambers might make an appearance in Resident Evil Damnation after the producer said after Leon and Claire, the fans wanted to see what happened to Rebecca after the mansion incident.
  • While every other character of Mercenaries and Mercenaries Reunion have an instant kill when a player stands behind a kneeling enemy (Chris neck breaks, Excella injects them with Uroboros, etc), Rebecca's attack to a kneeling enemy from behind does not guarantee a kill on a normal majini unlike the others.
  • When kicking a door open, Rebecca uses Sheva Alomar's signature Twist kick.
  • Strangely, in RE0, she was bitten by an Eliminator before falling. It is unknown how she did not become a zombie.
