The Red-Haired Man (赤毛の男 akage no otoko?) was a character scrapped along with the additional parts of Trevor's Diary, which can be found in a demo version of Resident Evil. He was intended to be one of the researchers working for Oswell E. Spencer.

Background[]

The Red-Haired Man was first seen on the 17th November, 1967[notes 1] by Trevor along with two other men in lab coats talking with Spencer, whispering about things such as "a huge market," "high marketibility," "the basic steps of research," "from a simple life[form] really" "it should [take] long years."[notes 2] When Trevor accidentally made some noise, the Red-Haired Man noticed him, but didn't say anything and quickly returned his attention to Spencer.

On the 20th November,[notes 3] Trevor was suddenly approached by the man, who smelled of disinfectant. He told Trevor there was something he needed to tell him. He then asked him what's next knowing what happened to his family,[notes 4] and to Trevor's perplexed reaction, he dejectedly muttered to himself that, "You don't know anything, huh... even such a little kid..."[notes 5] In response to that, Traver started to shake him and ask him about his family's whereabouts, but before he could say anything, they heard some kind of squirming noise, and then the Red-Haired Man muttered that, "there's something there..." and refused to say a word.

On the 23rd November,[notes 6] Trevor loudly mused that the hunting shotgun was missing from the wall of the Parlor. Spencer, who was standing nearby unnoticed, nonchalantly told him that it was destroyed – crushed "[...] as though an elephant had stepped on it. Granted, the shotgun still kept its shape, unlike the living being (that carried it)." [notes 7] Panicked, Trevor rushed back into the room that connected the Parlor to the hallway, and noticed a black stain and, upon closer inspection, a red hair on the floor alluding to the fate of the researcher.

As many parts from the original draft of Trevor's Diary, not only did these segments give some backstory, but also some indication to the traps and puzzles found in the Spencer Mansion.
