After escaping from Tokyo, Alice travels to Alaska to join the convoy survivors, but only finds Claire Redfield (who has been implanted with a device similar to the one seen on Jill Valentine's chest in Resident Evil 5). After its removal, Alice and Claire decide to fly to Los Angeles. They spot survivors that have taken shelter in the Los Angeles Prison that is surrounded by thousands of zombies. Among the survivors are Chris Redfield, Luther West, Bennent, Crystal Waters, Angel Ortiz, and Kim Yong.Luther introduces Alice to Chris, who is being held in a cage due to being wrongfully accused that he is a criminal. Chris asks Alice to talk some sense into them because he is innocent, but Alice just ignores this and leaves, but Chris tells her that they're gonna need him because he knows a way out. The barricades around the prison are eventually broken, leading to encounters with mutated zombies. Alice decides to release Chris. After releasing Chris, he is shocked to see that his sister, Claire, still alive. Chris tries to make Claire remember him but she just attacks him. Alice explains to Chris that Claire lost her memory. A battle in the shower room with the Executioner ensues. One by one the survivors are killed with the exception of Alice, Chris, and Claire.

After escaping the prison, the remaining survivors end up on a massive ship off the coast of Los Angeles, where Wesker returns and has a final showdown with Alice, Claire, and Chris. The ship is the Arcadia, the so called safe place where there is no infection. After boarding it, the group finds over 2,000 survivors and after seeing an Umbrella logo, realize that its an Umbrella trap to capture people to experiement upon. At least some of Claire's memory returns and she remembers that after landing on the beach they were approached by Umbrella men and had the devices put upon their chests, but Clarie fought back and managed to escape but lost her memory as a result of the device. They start releasing the prisoners, starting with K-Mart and Alice, while searching the ship further, encounters Wesker who survived the earlier fight thanks to the T-Virus along with Bennet and two zombie dogs which keep her at bay. Claire and Chris ambush Wesker and fight him, while Alice retrieves one of her shotguns and kill the dogs, but Chris and Claire are unable to defeat Wesker and are trapped. Wesker tries to eat Alice, but she stabs him in the head with a knife, stunning him and tries to go for her other shotgun. Bennet gets there first, but is knocked out by a recovered K-Mart who tosses Alice back her shotgun, allowing her to blast Wesker's head open and free Claire and Chris. Wesker's powers keep him alive so Claire and Chris empty their pistols into him before locking him and Bennet in a room together and go free the other prisoners. Wesker regenerates and kills Bennet then escapes into a helicopter and activates the purging bomb to kill everyone aboard Arcadia. However, he finds that Alice hid the bomb aboard the helicopter and it is destroyed. During the purging bombs explosion, a parachute falling from the sky goes unnoticed by Alice, Claire, and Chris hinting that Wesker may still be alive.

Production

Development

In May 2005, producers mentioned the possibility of following Extinction with a sequel titled Resident Evil: Afterlife, to be shot and set in Tokyo, Japan and Alaska.[3] Despite Resident Evil: Extinction being billed on the official website and elsewhere as the final installment of the Resident Evil film series; on September 23, 2007, Rory Bruer, Sony's head of distribution explained, "It absolutely would not surprise me considering the success of the franchise that they find a way to come up with another. It's a real possibility".[4] Producer Jeremy Bolt also stated that while there was no intention of making a fourth film, that the third had been particularly well done and that Paul Anderson was talking with Sony about the possibility.[5]

In October 2007, reports indicated that casting for the fourth film begun, with Jensen Ackles being considered for the role of Leon S. Kennedy.[6] Despite bringing Leon as a character in an upcoming film would contradict promotional information from Resident Evil: Apocalypse as Screen Gems created a faux newspaper, The Raccoon City Times, that detailed the background of Jill Valentine, and included that she was dismissed from the S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Squad) after the death of her partner, Leon Kennedy.[7] Ali Larter confirmed she would reprise her role "100% if asked".[8]

Nearly a year later, Anderson noted that negotiations were underway with Sony for creating the film.[9] During an interview with IGN in December 2008, Anderson stated that he was working on the script.[10] The following year, it was announced that Sony was aiming to release Resident Evil: Afterlife by August 27, 2010.[11] In a subsequent interview, Anderson stated he would now be directing the film as well, and that 'Afterlife' would be a 3-D film that will start a new Resident Evil film trilogy. He also stated the film had the largest budget in the series thus far and confirmed that Milla Jovovich would be returning to portray Alice. It will also feature new characters taken from the video games.[12]

Casting

At the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con, Milla Jovovich confirmed that she would return for the lead role of Alice, and noted that the clones from Extinction would also be returning.[13] On September 22, 2009 it was announced that Ali Larter would indeed reprise her role as Claire Redfield,[14] and on September 30, 2009, it was announced that Shawn Roberts would join the cast as Albert Wesker, with Wentworth Miller joining as Chris Redfield, and Spencer Locke returning as K-Mart. Kim Coates and Boris Kodjoe have also been cast.[15]Kacey Barnfield, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, and Norman Yeung will also make an appearance in the film. At a recent press conference in Japan, it was revealed Sienna Guillory will reprise her role as Jill Valentine.[16]

Filming

Principle photography officially began on September 29. 2009 in Toronto, Canada.[17][18]

Release date delays

In August 2009, it was announced that the film would be released on August 27, 2010.[19] Though, in December, it was set back to January 14, 2011.[20] In January 2010 it was announced that the release date was moved again, this time to September 10, 2010.[1]

Marketing

The first 3-D trailer was shown to a limited number of WonderCon 2010 attendees at Metreon in San Francisco, on April 2, followed by a non-3D version on April 3. The first teaser trailer was released on April 3, 2010 by MySpace in the Film Trailer Park. Paul W.S. Anderson narrated and presented his teaser trailer on April 4 at San Francisco WonderCon 2010. Theaters ran the teaser trailer as part of the premiere release of A Nightmare on Elm Street, on April 30, 2010. The film will also run in IMAX theaters. Trivia

  • The name of this movie "Afterlife" is the actually the very same working title that was planned to be used in the previous (and third) film before it became known as "Extinction".
  • Quite interestingly, despite the film's Tokyo opening scene stating that this was four years after the Viral Outbreak turned the majority of the world's humanity into Zombies, the events in Resident Evil:Afterlife REALLY occurred 7 years afterward, though possibly 6 to 6-and-a-half years following the events of the second film,Resident Evil:Apocalypse.
  • This is the first live-action movie based on a video game to be in 3-D.
  • Features plot elements from Resident Evil Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 5. An example of this involves the battle against Wesker, in which his movements and that of Chris along Claire, are similar to those of the fight Wesker has against Chris and Sheva near the end of Resident Evil 5.
  • Chris Redfield makes his first appearance in movie franchise.
  • Jill Valentine returns for a brief cameo in a scene that plays during the end credits, where it is revealed that she has not only survived throughout all of the events of the third film,Resident Evil:Extinction, but also that she, unfortunately, has since become an antagonist, due to a mind control device worn on her chest. This is very similar to what happens to her in the fifth game.
  • Albert Wesker wears two outfits in the film: His Umbrella Chronicles Tuxedo (which is also used in Resident Evil 4) and his Resident Evil 5 Midnight Outfit.
  • This is the first Resident Evil film Paul W.S. Anderson has both written and directed since Resident Evil.
  • In the game Resident Evil 5, the large man holding a large axe is called The Executioner, but in the movie, he's referred as The Axeman.
  • Due to its purpose in the story as the base of Wesker, the Arcadia is most likely a reference to the Tricell tanker from Resident Evil 5.
  • The tentacles that spew out of Wesker's mouth are similar to the Las Plagas from Resident Evil 4 & Resident Evil 5.
  • Claire Redfield wears a red vest, her primary outfit from her game appearances.
  • There are thousands of survivors being held in capsules for experiments, just like in a large elevator chamber where the wall is of capsules of people being used for experiments in Resident Evil 5.
  • Alice and her comrades escape the building through the sewers, just like how Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, Claire Redfield and Sherry Birkin did in Resident Evil 2 out of the Raccoon City Police Department.
  • In past Resident Evil movies Alice has yellow-blond hair with some of her natural brown color, but in this movie, Alice has no yellow-blond hair but entirely brown.
    Prison yard

    Alice fighting zombies in Afterlife

  • Chris wears an outfit similar to the BSAA uniform of his game incarnation.
  • Actor Wentworth Miller is about Chris's age in RE5
  • A Japanese Umbrella Corporation Sniper uses the phrase "Bio Hazard" which is the original Japanese title for Resident Evil.
  • This is the first movie in the series to not feature the Anti-Virus, the cure to the T-Virus.
  • The first zombie seen in the film (in Tokyo at the beginning of the outbreak) is played by famous Japanese pop star, Mika Nakashima.
  • It is never mentioned if the Tokyo facility is the only Umbrella facility left in the world.
  • It is unknown if Alice possesses any more clones, although since we do not see them after the first part of the film, they may have all died before the start of Afterlife. However this is all speculation and yet to be confirmed.
  • With a gross of around $300 million worldwide, the film is the highest-grossing Canadian film and highest-grossing entry in the Resident Evil film series.
  • The plane Alice flies is a Russian-built Yakovlev Yak-52.
  • Wentworth Miller jokingly admits he was nervous about his character Chris Redfield being similar to Michael Scoffield from Prison Break when his first lines were in a prison and his first lines are "I know a way out of here".
  • The opening scene in the movie is quite symbolic - all people are wearing umbrellas in the rain except the zombie girl. "Umbrella" is also the name of the corporation who is responsible for the creation and spread of the T-Virus, on which the main plot of the Resident Evil series is based.
  • In the shower scene you can see the water in one shot but in another you cant, but can hear the water.
  • Angel Ortiz is the only survivor in the prison to be killed by another survivor instead of Majini or the Axeman
  • The scene of Wesker and two Alice clones falling through a window is reminiscent of Wesker and Sergei's Ivan soldiers in the Dark Legacy chapter of Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.
