Further notes

Umbrella Corps (styled: "UMBRELLA CORPS"), known in Japan as BIOHAZARD UMBRELLA CORPS (バイオハザードアンブレラコア Baiohazādo anburera koa?) is an upcoming online multiplayer game to be published by Capcom. It is scheduled to launch May 2016 on Steam and PlayStation 4 to coincide with the franchise's 20th anniversary.

Plot

Being intended as an online cooperative game only, Umbrella Corps does not offer much in terms of plot. It is instead gameplay focused, like many of Capcom's mobile games.

In the aftermath of Umbrella's collapse in 2003, the corporation's viral samples and research data have been ransacked and sold on the black market. Consequently, bioterrorism has spiralled into global threat. With the resulting viral outbreaks being too numerous for even the B.S.A.A. to contend with, entire districts have been simply locked down and abandoned. Within these districts, independent "Zombie Hunters" commit illegal activities for their own reasons (in the English backstory it is referred to as a "sport" conducted by thrillseekers, though the Japanese leaves it vague). Against them are mercenaries sent in to obtain viral samples, either by pharmaceutical corporations intent on gaining sole rights to vaccines or underground bioterror networks looking to increase the range of their B.O.W. merchandise.

The game is set after the events of Resident Evil 6 and takes place in 2015.[3]

Gameplay

Unlike the previous shooter, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, Umbrella Corps focuses much more on close-quarters battle (CQB). Four special weapons have been identified so far:

  1. The "Debrainer" or "Cronus", known only as the "Zombie Vile" (ゾンビバイル Zonbibairu?) in Japan: a modified ice ax intended for destroying the link between the cerebrum and spinal cord.
  2. The "Tactical Shield", known as the "Bite Guard" (ベイトガード Beitogādo?) in Japan: an armoured attachment to the arm which deflects bullets. It contains a sticky resin which can prevent zombies getting any closer should they get stuck.
  3. The "Terrain Spikes", known as the "Zombie Climbing Irons" (ゾンビアイゼン Zonbiaizen?) in Japan: these studded boots are used to destroy the heads of crawling and downed zombies to prevent any further attacks.
  4. The "Zombie Jammer" (ゾンビジャマー Zonbijamā?): a device which emits electromagnetic radiation designed to disorient nearby zombies, thus preventing the user from being attacked. The official website recommends destroying an enemy's jammer to prevent them escaping.

Maps

The game features previous areas from previous installments in the series, including The village and Public Assembly for specific reasons, as well as original maps such as a quarantined Tricell laboratory.

Modes

Being a multiplayer-based game, Umbrella Corps has more range in online gametypes than offline. "One Life Match" is a multiplayer mode where players fight during a three minute round with only one life - if they die, the game is over. The game also features a single player challenge mode, titled "The Experiment", where the player goes through up to twenty trials. In one mission, the player is to kill a number of Zombies and obtain blood samples from their bodies.

A complete list of game modes follows:

  • One Life Match
  • Multi Mission
    • Respawn Match
    • Target Hunter
    • Domination
    • DNA Hunter
    • SP DNA Hunter
    • Protector
    • Collector
    • Collar War
  • Single Mode

Development

Umbrella Corps was first announced at the 2015 TGS during Sony's panel, as part of a celebration of the series' 20th anniversary. Later multiple trailers showing the game were released, revealing more maps and modes as well as a release date of May 2016.
