Resident Evil is an upcoming 2026[2] film by Constantin Film, Vertigo Entertainment and PlayStation Productions. The film will be directed by Zach Cregger and written by Cregger and Shay Hatten.[3] This entry is the second attempt at a reboot of the titular live-action film franchise following Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) and is set to begin filming in 2025 with a planned release of September 18, 2026. The international distributor has not yet been confirmed, though Constantin and Metropolitan FilmExport have pre-existing agreements to handle German and French territories. Unlike previous films which have all followed an ensemble cast, Resident Evil will primarily focus on a single protagonist's journey through Raccoon City.[4]
According to the creators, the film will focus on the story of new characters in an original setting, as they felt that the Resident Evil fandom already had enough content with original characters thanks to the games and they wanted to offer them something new.[5]

It is obedient to the lore of the games, it’s just a different story. I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.” For those hoping to see a faithful adventure with Leon, Cregger tells fans “They can play the game.”
