Early discussions[]

Interest in a video game-centred reboot began during production of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. After talks of a Resident Evil 7-inspired reboot helmed by The Conjuring director James Wan fell through, Johannes Roberts approached Jeremy Bolt about directing a a reboot, desired a "hard-R" film to appeal to fans of the games over a general audience demographic.[1] The film was met by several setbacks including a significantly reduced budget and filming restraints as a result of the emerging pandemic. This resulting in significant trimming of the script and the loss of several creatures and major VFX sequences. Constantin nonetheless saw potential in a sequel; Rebecca Chambers and Barry Burton were cut to spare the characters from being killed off, and sequences were inserted to tease a potential Resident Evil CODE:Veronica adaptation.[2][3][4] The finished work had a mixed reception among fans and was largely ignored by general audiences, grossing $41M at the box office against it's reported $25M budget, partially due to many cinemas closures and audience attitudes regarding the then-onging pandemic's emerging third wave. Nevertheless, Constantin was ultimately happy with the film's digital sales, being the top-rented film on VUDU and earning a modest $3.6 million on home media sales.[5][6][7][8]

By October of that year, the film was one of several projects confirmed by executive producer Martin Moszkowicz to be in development alongside another television series following Netflix's series cancelled two months prior, though the exact details were not given. Moszkowicz was sceptical of films being released for theatres if not projected to be successful.[9]

Pre-production[]

On 3 April 2023, Raccoon HG Film Productions Inc., the same shell company for financing Welcome to Raccoon City, received a grant of $2 million from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) for the production of "Umbrella Chronicles".[note 2] Greater Sudbury was picked as the principal film location, with Northern Ontario Film Studios recorded on the Production Weekly bulletin as their headquarters.[10][11][12][13] By April a production designer and design crew were already at work visualising the script.[14]

In September 2024, it was reported that Barbarian director Zach Cregger had been in talks with Sony to direct the film.[15]

notes
  1. Anderson and Bolt are credited by contractual-obligation and will likely not be actively involved.
  2. It should be noted that the Production Weekly synopsis is heavily derived from the Wikipedia article on the Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles video game (particularly the segment covering Train Derailment). Similarly, while the James Wan-Greg Russo film was in early development, Production Weekly's entry instead published a synopsis of the 2002 film.
