Resident Evil Re:Verse, known in Japan as Biohazard RE:Verse (バイオハザード RE:バース Baiohazādo RE:Bāsu ) is a multiplayer video game first announced during the Resident Evil Showcase (January 2021) as celebration of the franchise's 25th Anniversary.[1] It was originally set for a 2021 release with a download code included as part of a bundle with Resident Evil Village, but was delayed until October 28, 2022.
A closed beta took place between January 28–30[2] and an open beta took place for three periods: April 8–11, 14–16 and 21.[3] During the Resident Evil Showcase (October 2022), Re:Verse was announced to have an early access play period for owners of Resident Evil Village prior to its official launch, which took place on October 23, 2022, 19:00 PDT to October 25, 2022, 23:00 PDT.
Gameplay[]
Resident Evil Re:Verse is a third-person multiplayer shooter featuring a variety of characters from across the Resident Evil franchise. Two-to-six players compete in five-minute deathmatch battles, using weapons and items found through the map, with the player scoring the most points (RP) at the end of the match winning.[1] Each human character has their own set of skills and weapon loadout.
Humans that are taken down transform into powerful bioweapons that can change the tide of battle, with players able to upgrade their bioweapon transformation by obtaining virus capsules.[1] Once the bioweapon is killed, the player will respawn as a human.
Re:Verse incentivizes the player achieving multiple consecutive kills in a row (kill streaks) by rewarding them with more points, with bonus points being given by successfully killing opponents in the top three position on the scoreboard. If a player is killed during a kill streak, they can regain their streak by killing the revenge target (indicated by a skull icon above the killer's character).
After completing a match, the players with the top three highest scores will be displayed on the results screen. Players in the top three ranking will also be awarded points towards their [[MMR]], increasing their rank. Match statistics such as kills, time spent playing as a specific character, and more are tracked via RESIDENT EVIL.NET when an account is connected.
Points earned from matches can be used to purchase RE Coins, which can then be used to purchase additional human and bioweapon upgrades. Players are also tasked with completing challenges listed in the BattlePass menu to earn cosmetic rewards such as character skins, weapon charms, and victory poses.
The game offers two methods of matchmaking, Standard and Passcode. Standard automatically fills a match with players, while Passcode is a private lobby system with access being given with a specific passcode displayed in the room menu. Private matches started from the Passcode menu do not reward the player with RP.
Resident Evil Re:Verse features two classes of playable characters: Humans (also called "survivors" in promotional materials) and bioweapons. These characters are based on their appearances in games utilizing the RE Engine (Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and Resident Evil Village). Several characters also have unlockable skins (via the Battle Pass/Premium Pass or downloadable content) referencing pre-RE Engine titles such as Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps, and Resident Evil 6.
Development[]
Chris was initially shown in promotional material and beta playtests using his design from Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, however, after the official launch of the game, Chris's design has been changed to reflect his updated appearance from Resident Evil Village. Chris's earlier appearance is an unlockable character skin using RP under the title "Not A Hero".
As part of the game's official release announcement during the Resident Evil Showcase (October 2022), Capcom unveiled a roadmap for post-launch content including additional survivors, costumes, and Battle Pass updates. The first update was released on November 16, 2022.[5]
