To advertise 2002's Resident Evil, Sony Pictures set up a poster design competition, encouraging fan submissions. The contest was held in the US and Canada, though Quebec was left out.
Background[]
The idea for a contest was inspired by such films as the Blair Witch Project, which was heavily promoted on the internet rather than through traditional marketing techniques. While Sony Pictures themselves were responsible for designing posters for the film, ScreenGems' marketing chief, Valerie Van Galder, proposed reaching out to the online Resident Evil fandom for their own ideas.[1]
Event[]
For the event, some 100 stills of the film were made available for the contestants, who were allowed to submit up to three poster designs, each. All submissions were to be sent in by 12pm PST on December 31, 2001. Following this, a panel of van Galder and four other judges picked out a winner and four runners-up out of some 3000 submissions between 18–25 January 2002. The winning entrant was former games developer Des Barres, who received $2,500 and an offer to attend a private screening in his hometown with up to 100 friends.[1][2]
