For other iterations, see Richard Aiken (disambiguation).

Richard Aiken (リチャード・エイケン Richādo Eiken?) was a member of the Special Tactics and Rescue Service, serving as the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team communications expert.[3][notes 1] On a personal level, Richard is described as being a "positive, sweet guy" who, despite his relatively young age, is "surprisingly cool-headed and calm under pressure". His weapon of choice was his customized assault shotgun. He also had a girlfriend named Bridgette.

Biography[]

Early Life and Law enforcement career[]

As a young man, paralyzed by fear, Richard had to watch his younger sister being murdered by an armed criminal. Throughout his life, he lived with the guilt of his sister's death and regretted his impotence and inability to have protected her, believing that he should have died in her place. As a result, he grew up with a strong desire to have the power to protect others. This desire served as the main motivation for his future career. Richard was assigned to the S.T.A.R.S Bravo team and was put in charge of communications, where he earned a reputation for being easily able to read people's emotions and do what was necessary to protect someone, even if it cost his own life.[4]

Because he always greeted new S.T.A.R.S members warmly, he also played an important role in the formation of Rebecca Chambers, supporting the rookie when she was recruited in June 1998.

Arklay Incident Investigation[]

On July 23, Richard was called along with the Bravo team to investigate cases of strange murders in the Arklay Mountains, being entrusted with taking care of Rebecca during the mission.[3] When group was stranded in Raccoon Forest, the team was attacked and Richard, along with most of his teammates, managed to make their way to an apparently abandoned Spencer Mansion, but scattered when they found it filled with undead.

Rebecca & Richard UC

Aiken found Chambers at Spencer Mansion.

Richard found Rebecca sleeping in a remote bedroom in the nearby dormitory. Richard comforted the youngest member, assuaging her fears and gaining her assistance in an attempt to locate Enrico Marini, their captain, in the hopes of making a plan to escape the mansion or summon help. The two proceeded throughout several areas of the mansion and grounds, desperately seeking Marini. Eventually, the two were attacked by a giant snake. While they were successful in driving the beast away, Richard took Yawn's final attack to spare Rebecca. Richard was bitten on the side and thrown through the air before the beast slithered away.

Aiken injured is attended by Chambers REmake

Aiken injured being attended by Chambers shortly before he dies.

Rebecca then dragged a poisoned and severely injured Richard to the mansion's east-wing. While being nursed by Rebecca, Richard is discovered by Chris Redfield. Rebecca informs Chris of Richard's situation and requests a serum to cure him. Not wanting another friend to die, Chris obliges and tracks down the serum, handing it over in time to allow Richard's survival. Before he passed out, Richard gave Chris his short-wave radio. The radio, however, was broken and could only be used to receive S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team's pilot Brad Vickers's transmissions. Richard was then taken to the storage room to rest, while being watched by Rebecca. After recovering, however, he perished by the hand of a B.O.W.,[notes 2] once again risking his life to keep a member of the Alpha Team out of harm's way.

After his death, his lover, Bridgette, read aloud a letter he wrote to her at the RPD's joint funeral for the Alpha and Bravo Team casualties.[4]

notes
  1. Excerpt from biohazard 0 kaitaishinsho:
    "ブラヴォーチームに所属する若手隊員で、 明朗快活な好男子。周囲への配慮がきき面倒見が良いため、 隊の新人レベッカのサポート役をまかされており、 今回が初出動となる彼女のことを誰よりも気づかっている。愛用の武器はショットガンだが、 任務中は戦闘に参加するよりも、 通信技師として補助にまわることが多い。"
  2. Accounts differ as to which B.O.W. has killed Aiken or how he dies from it:
    • In the first account, Aiken was killed by the Yawn either by succumbing to the serpent's venom or sacrificing himself.
    • While in the other account, he was eaten alive by a Neptune instead.
