The First Castellan was a distant ancestor of Ramon Salazar, and ruler over an isolated region of Spain during the continuing reign of the Spanish Inquisition. Greatly opposed to the expanding religious movement known as "Los Iluminados", the individual began a brutal wave of persecution against followers of the faith, and had the object of their faith- a parasitic organism known as Las Plagas -sealed in an ancient complex in the caves beneath his castle.
Unfortunately, the parasite would eventually break free from its prison. Salazar, lacking any family, was easily swayed by the preachings of Osmund Saddler. From this, Salazar was convinced into "atoning for his sins" by setting the parasites free from their cave prison.
