Salazar Castle (サラザール城 Sarazāru-jō?) was an enormous fortress located in Valdelobos, a mountainous region of Spain. Built on high ground, it loomed over the nearby villages and hamlets, and was separated from them by a deep ravine and a lake. Along with the castle itself, this fortress consisted of several other large buildings surrounded by a large wall.

The castle was built before or during the time of Salazar, 1st Castellan. The expansive ruins below it were used as a prison for the Plaga parasites to prevent the cult of Los Iluminados from surviving beyond his reign. The ruins were reopened in the 21st century on the orders of Ramón Salazar, who had become a member of the revived cult.

Leon S. Kennedy and Ashley Graham escaped from the village and into Salazar Castle while attempting to evade a large horde of pursuing enemies.

It is a concentric castle that uses the lake as a natural moat. The interior of the building seems much more modern, resembling an 18th-century palace.

Within its walls hides both an opulent palace and a number of horrific deathtraps. Many rooms within the castle house menacing creatures, such as Novistadores and Armadura.

Areas of interest include an extensive hedge maze filled with Salazar's "pets," many large towers, including one that houses a gigantic statue of Salazar himself, and an extensive sewer and cave system, housing some of the castellan's pet insects. The castle may have been built near a volcano, as one of the rooms was situated directly above a lava pit.

Main castle[]

The castle, proper is located at the southern side of the fortress, and is connected to the village by way of a drawbridge. Further north was a ballroom, which could be reached quickly through a gondola station. Outside the ballroom was a tall clock tower which allowed access to the ballroom and the Castellan's throne room via a rotating bridge.

Lowlands and underground[]

The grounds in the lowlands of the fortress contains remnants of an older castle which had been destroyed some time ago. Wooden shacks litter the landscape as housing for workmen assigned to mine the underground ruins, which are centuries older than the castle and are decorated with pagan artwork.

Resident Evil 4 Tower and Cathedral seen from below

The cathedral can be reached by an elevator near the entrance to the underground. The building, in 2004, was dominated by a large, mechanised statue of the 8th Castellan.

A final, solitary tower was connected to the Cathedral via a bridge. It was built overlooking the fortress' walls overlooking the lake, and had access to a dock for transport to the nearby island.

The Castle begins at Chapter 3-1 and continues until Chapter 4–4. The most common enemies of the castle are the Cultists, the monastic order of Los Iluminados. They are armed with flails and occasionally scythes. Further into the castle you will eventually reach the Plaga Mines, where you meet up with some familiar foes. Among the many sub-bosses in the castle include Armadura, Garradors, Cultist Leaders, and Chainsaw Men. Bosses include Salazar's "right hand" Verdugo, twin El Gigantes, and finally Salazar himself.

Further notes[]

  • Many architectural elements of the Castle were taken from real places.[1][2][3]
  • In the room where you can find a RPG-7 surrounded by glass, you can also spot a massive painting depicting famous Greek philosophers. This is the "The School of Athens" by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael.
  • In addition, the bedroom where you encounter Ada for the first time also houses the work "Primavera" by Italian Renaissance artist Botticelli.
  • In the room where the cage with Garrador is located, a fresco can be seen on the wall - its "Funerary monument to Sir John Halkwood" by Paolo Uccelo. Commissioned in 1436 for Florence's Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore
  • The Castle is visible from the Skylift and the silhouette can be seen from the island when the player first arrives.
  • Apparently, the castle's existence was known by the Umbrella Corporation prior to its fall, as blueprints and schematics for the castle could be seen on the screen just after Albert Wesker returns to his hideout and accessing the Umbrella Archives.
