The Shotgun is a powerful gun found in most Resident Evil games. It can cause considerable damage to tightly grouped enemies. The shotgun varies in power with each game but is always one of the most versatile weapons in any players arsenal, capable of knocking over large enemies while mutilating softer targets like zombies. Although the exact amount of violence incurred varies by game, the shotgun has been seen capable of blowing off heads, blasting out kneecaps, destroying torsos or even slicing entire bodies in half. It is loaded with Shotgun Shells.
Types of shotguns
RE0: The main shotgun resembles the Mossberg-500 or Remington M31. Also available is a Hunting Shotgun.
RE1: Remington M870 Wingmaster, as it appears in the game.
+ REmake: This time, the shotgun looks exactly like a Winchester 1897, whereas the 'assault shotgun' is a Benelli M3 automatic.
RE2: A short M870, even though listed in the game as the M1100-P (a variant that does not exist in reality), later can be upgraded to the real semi-automatic Remington 1100.
RE3: Benelli M3 short version, Winchester M1887 lever-action shotgun.
Resident Evil Survivor: Franchi SPAS 12.
RECV and Resident Evil: Survivor 2 Code: Veronica: Franchi SPAS-12.
REUC: Basic shotgun, Assault Shotgun, Shotgun SA
Resident Evil 4 Shotguns
Basic Shotgun (Mossberg M500A Persuader)
The first shotgun in the game is available for purchase from the Merchant for 20,000 pesetas. However, a free shotgun is available on the second floor of the house in the village. The Shotgun is powerful at close range, but damage and stopping power decreases over range. It takes up 16 spaces (8x2) of Leon's inventory.
To start, it has a firepower of 4.0, can fire every 1.53 seconds, takes 3.03 seconds to reload, and has a capacity of 6 shells.
Fully upgraded, it has a firepower of 8.0, can fire every 1.53 seconds, takes 1.50 seconds to reload, and has a capacity of 18 shells. The Shotgun costs 277,000 pesetas to fully upgrade (257,000 if the player stole the Shotgun in the village instead of buying one).
Its exclusive allows it to have a firepower of 6.0 at long range. An interesting mechanic means that one pellet can cause substantial damage normally limited to the shotgun's close range shooting.
The Basic Shotgun is useful at the beginning of the game, where enemies are often grouped together. It becomes rather unwieldy when faced with most bosses, due to its poor range and slow rate of fire.
This shotgun is often mistaken for a M870 Wingmaster. However, close examination reveals it to be a Mossberg M500. This is supported by interviews with Ryoumura Jyoshin (the weapon designer for the Resident Evil series).
Riot Gun (Benelli M4 Super 90)
The Riot Gun is the second shotgun available to the player. It can be purchased from the Merchant for 32,000 pesetas. Like the Basic Shotgun, the Riot Gun's power decreases over longer range. It takes up 16 spaces (8x2) of Leon's inventory.
To start, it has a firepower of 5.0, can fire every 1.53 seconds, takes 3.03 seconds to reload, and has a capacity of 7 shells.
Fully upgraded, it has a firepower of 8.0, can fire every 1.53 seconds, takes 1.50 seconds to reload, and has a capacity of 17 shells. The Riot Gun costs 415,000 pesetas to fully upgrade.
Its exclusive upgrade increases its firepower to 10.0. With the exclusive, it is a more powerful gun than the Basic Shotgun, but it is far more expensive to upgrade than either the Basic Shotgun or the Striker.
Striker (Armsel DAO-12 "Street Sweeper")
- Main article: Striker
The Striker is the third and final shotgun available to the player. It is purchased for the price of 43,000 pesetas. Compared to the other two shotguns, the Striker's damage decreases more dramatically over distance, but its shot radius is wider. The Striker takes up 10 spaces (5x2) of Leon's inventory, making it the most compact of all the shotguns.
To start, it has a firepower of 6.0, can fire every 0.73 seconds, takes 3.00 seconds to reload, and has a capacity of 12 shells.
Fully upgraded, it has a firepower of 12.0, can fire every 0.73 seconds, takes 1.50 seconds to reload, and has a capacity of 28 shells. The Striker costs 392,000 pesetas to fully upgrade. It is widely considered the best overall shotgun due to its capacity, power, and firing rate.
Its exclusive upgrade increases its capacity to 100 shells.
It is great for any form of close range combat, and one of the best weapons for groups. Its exclusive upgrade allows the player to store most of his/her shells in the gun, so less space is required for spare shotgun shells. Its primary downside is its overly wide spread, resulting in an extremely short range.
Ada's Shotgun (Mossberg 590 Cruiser)
Ada uses a special shotgun in Separate Ways. It lacks a buttstock and has a shorter barrel than Leon's Shotgun, but the pump has a vertical foregrip.
It has a firepower of 5.0, can fire every 1.53 seconds, takes 3.03 seconds to reload, and has a capacity of 12 shells.
Ada's Shotgun cannot be upgraded.
Resident Evil 5
- Resident Evil 5's shotguns are the Ithaca M37, Benelli M3, Jail Breaker and the Hydra, a triple barrel sawn off, that is unlocked by fully upgrading the M37.
