Skills are a new gameplay element/mechanic featured in Resident Evil 6. They take the place of upgrading weapons, allowing characters to upgrade abilities with weapons such as firearm damage, reload speed, or steady aim. Other upgrades are available, including attributes such as defense or making a character more effectively handle J'avo or zombies, or even alter the behavior of an AI partner for single-player. Many skills are universal between characters, however there are some unique skills based upon a character and their unique playstyle (such as Leon's dual-wielding or Jake's Hand-to-Hand). Some skills are only unlocked under certain conditions such as killing a certain number of enemies, getting a certain number of kills with a weapon-type or even completing campaigns.

Equipping Skills
Player will be able to create individual sets of skills. A set comprises of three different skills equipped by a player (upgrades replace lower levels, so it is not possible to have J'avo Killer Lvl. 1 and J'avo Killer Lvl. 2 equipped simultaneously). To start, players will only be able to create one set. However, as skills are unlocked and the game progresses, they will eventually be able to create up to eight different sets of skill.[2]
Sets can be changed and equipped at any moment by accessing the character's menu. It should be noted however that the game will not pause while changing or equipping skills, so it leaves the player vulnerable if there are enemies around. As suggested previously, of a character purchases a skill that is accessible to other characters, all of those other characters will also be able to equip the skill without needing to purchase it again. Only one set can be equipped at a time.
