Leon isn't Italian[]

Leon isn't Italian nor did his family get killed due to "ties with the mafia". As an Italian I can tell you that this man ain't Italian and he has no canonical backstory. —The preceding unsigned comment was made by Comfortcruise (talkcontribs).

I think we should move this info to the trivia section due to the nature of it being from an interview containing information that hasn't been referenced in 25 years and came out before Resident Evil 2 had even released. The fact they don't even bother to make Leon's face models of Italian descent is particularly telling, and the mafia backstory makes no sense with the way the writers currently portray Leon. You'd think a man whose mother died horrifically wouldn't make a joke to Ashley asking her if she was his mom. —The preceding unsigned comment was made by Rapididous (talkcontribs).

Leon's parentage is a really old thing from when the game came out, and I see a lot of Italian fans being baffled by it on Twitter over the years. The developers got the idea for Leon from the movie, "Léon: The Professional" (hence the RE4 difficulty mode), and I suppose merged him with Natalie Portman's orphan character (I didn't watch the film mind you). It was used in official marketing, appearing in a gaming magazine, a promotional Leon "interview" where he talks about his life, and a Capcom Fan Club art book. While you could headcanon away the issue that it's an adopted name, or that his dad was Irish but he was raised with an Italian identity, the real reason is probably just that the Capcom devs thought "Kennedy" was just a normal-sounding American name.-- Forerunner (talk) 03:28, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
Italian immigrants had surname changes. "Canadeo" was anglicized as Kennedy, for example. News Bot (talk) 13:40, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
