Resident Evil Netflix - Jade and Billie Wesker 1

Jade and Billie found by their father

Billie Wesker lies wounded on the floor of Umbrella HQ after being mauled by the dog. She regains consciousness, but is in shock and bleeding out. With Umbrella HQ's security system tripped, the Umbrella Security Service has placed the city under lockdown and a security team is on its way. While Jade checks on Billie's wound, they are confronted by Al, who followed them to the facility. After assessing Billie's condition, Al has the two girls run out through a side door back home, warning they are not to go to a hospital. To distract the guards, Al sabotages the CCTV system and covers himself in the dog's blood.

With the girls gone, Al surrenders to the guards and gives them his identity. As they search the facility, Al gives his official statement to Roth at the BSL-3 lab, saying the facility was subject to a cyberattack which released the dog's security lock while he was working late. The guards nonetheless verify his story, while a team in high-vis jackets assess for damages. Umbrella CEO Evelyn Marcus arrives in the BSL-3 lab, having abandoned a business meeting in Tokyo to meet with Al about his opposition to Joy, with her insisting the Tijuana Incident was a freak accident. Marcus is suspicious about the attack, noting the lack of any ransomware demands which suggest a motive other than money. Al leaves as Evelyn is ambushed by her concerned wife, Diana.

At home, Al attends to Billie, and is forced to explain the dog was being treated for a "rare genetic disease". He has his doubts she will suffer the same disease and, compared with SARS-CoV-2 she has no need to be in quarantine. Al demands the two girls promise they'd never mention trespassing, warning them that Umbrella was working on classified "government" projects which risk would guarantee a severe punishment if discovered.

Al testing on a rat

In the morning, Al checks on Billie by examining her corneas for discolouration. Jade watches him, then goes on her laptop to investigate Umbrella's Tijuana lab she saw on the video. She finds one website claiming to have "The Truth", but it is blocked by her ISP. Al arrives and takes her to school, while Billie must remain home as a precaution. At work, Al examines Billie's blood under a microscope and injects it into a lab rat to examine; he soon begins convulsing and injects himself with more of Billie's blood to stabilise his condition.

Jade arrives late for school, hearing from her friend Nerd Girl that Simon has gotten a hold of Deca-Dence; Jade is confused why people would be excited over anime, and learns that as a dedicated internet service provider Umbrella has blocked all porn, torrenting and pirated streaming sites with Simon using his computer skills to bypass the firewall just for this one series. Jade asks him to help her access umbrellatruth.com, which he agrees to do in exchange for her necklace. The website is successfully bypassed, and discusses stolen reports of an outbreak at the Tijuana facility that caused infected employees to begin eating one another. Simon is dismissive of the content, passing it off as mad ramblings, but Jade uses his laptop to post her email address (jade07w@gmail.com) to gain direct contact, passing it off as her playing into the joke.

Back at Umbrella HQ, Al meets with Evelyn in her office, who wants him to fix whatever problems Joy has immediately so it can be shipped in two months. Al warns her of the risks, as she herself experienced a viral outbreak when she was younger, but she is not interested. Instead she shifts the conversation to Al's physical ailment, which only she knows about, and mocks how he has gone from needing weekly injections to daily from his "cute little blood bags".

The Devil You Know - Jade and Angel conversation

Jade Contacting Angel Rubio

At home, Billie checks herself in the mirror and begins throwing up after seeing herself bleeding. She notices Pablo is irritated by her. Meanwhile, Jade has a video call with Angel Rubio, admin on the website. He is an investigative reporter, formerly of The Baja Post, who has become obsessed with the unusually high incident rate at the company's lab. In one case last week, a researcher went on a rampage and killed nine people three days after being bitten by a lab animal. His story went unpublished due to Umbrella's efforts to kill the story, and he was fired. Their conversation is cut when Jade is found by Ms. Underwood and told to go to class; the reporter is shocked to hear her name as "Wesker", being familiar with that name.

Billie is walking Pablo around town, but due to his agitation he keeps pulling her and finally wriggles free. Pablo runs into the arms of a man, who becomes suspicious when he tries to bite her and suspects she is a dognaper. When he insists on taking him to the shelter, Billie punches the man in the face and seizes Pablo. When she gets home she begins bleeding from her mouth. Meanwhile the rat begins to suffer extreme reactions to Billie's contaminated blood and begins smashing the glass.

2036[]

Having jumped out into the Dead Land to escape Umbrella, Jade is forced to fend for herself against the Zero horde. As a high priority asset, Baxter orders his men to focus on killing the Zeroes to protect her so she can be captured. Yen makes an escape attempt in a modified car, which Jade jumps onto. He is scared she will lure Umbrella to him, and before Jade can convince him to work with her they are attacked by a pack of Zeroes who tear him apart. Jade takes the car away.

RE Netflix Stills 8

Jade in Dover Freehold

Jade drives out to Dover, arriving at daybreak. In the past month the Dover Freehold has signed a security contract with Umbrella, who's regular U.S.S. patrols prevent the spread of infection. Jade keeps quiet when driving in and is not noticed. Heading into an apartment block above a market, she meets with Melinda, who's husband Barry helped traffic her in from Cairo but he is away. Using Melinda's sat-link, Jade warns Arjun Umbrella is after her, and is told to cross the channel to Calais. While the Brotherhood who control Calais have a bad reputation, they will never allow Umbrella to enter. Melinda is agitated by Jade's presence, and threatens to report her to Umbrella if she doesn't leave. Her threat fails when Jade hears a sound in the bathroom, and discovers Barry has been chained up in the bathroom after being infected and fed dead cats. Jade enters the room to recover his pocket book which lists his trafficker contacts, but he is able to rip his hand off and attack. Melinda is saved, but she is distraught at her husband's death.

After Jade's departure, Baxter arrives to meet with Melinda after the drones identified a "person of interest". Melinda identifies the woman in an accompanying photograph but says she is gone. Baxter is curious as to why Jade would come there, and more so when he is told he isn't allowed in the bathroom.

S1E2 - Crowds Dispersing

Umbrella shooting at the refugees

Elsewhere in town, Jade makes her way into Perseverance Tavern, a pub frequented by traders and playing punk music. Having read through Barry's book, she finds her way to Charon, a human trafficker who accepts hefty payments to take people to Calais. As Barry's goods shipment failed to arrive, he wants her to pay the debt before even considering getting herself a ride. Instead she steals a token from Drunk Asshole to take his place.

At night, Jade heads to the pier to hide herself among the refugees. As a ferry arrives, the trafficker directing them is shot from a distance and the group are confronted by a U.S.S. convoy backed-up by an armed drone. The crowd is forced on the run with the drone killing one after the other while Baxter looks on from his stationary vehicle.

The Devil You Know - bridge behind-the-scenes

Behind-the-scenes of the bridge scene at the start of the episode.

The Devil You Know was written by executive producer Mary Leah Sutton. It was filmed alongside Welcome to New Raccoon City as Block 1 from mid-February to the end of March 2021. Location filming included the Cheré Botha school, dressed as Raccoon City High School, and the Norval Foundation art museum which served as Umbrella HQ. The sequence where Billie is walking Pablo was filmed at Paardevlei Estates, a luxury condo.[2]

When designing Simon's laptop, a stock image of Mechs was used.[3]
