"A hospital transformed into some kind of hive full of squirming things. We pushed on and pushed the repulsive image from our minds."
— Localized level description

The Hive, known in Japan as "Den" (巣窟 Sōkutsu?), is the third scenario featured in Resident Evil Outbreak. It takes place predominantly in Raccoon General Hospital and the sewers below.

Plot

George Hamilton, along with Jim Chapman and Cindy Lennox take shelter at the besieged, though largely-abandoned Raccoon General Hospital. Dr. Hersh walks in them in Room 301 by accident, and suggests they leave the building immediately. With power to the elevators having suddenly gone out, Hersh leaves to turn it back on. He is attacked by leeches drawn to a zombie-bite on his arm, and is used as a vehicle in which they can assume a humanoid form, also known as the Leech Man.

After that, the team took the elevator to 1F. Once there, they went to the Office and grabbed the "Part of Memo" file, which contains the Carmine Code. Then they went back to the elevator and took it to B1F. When they get to B1F Passway, the Leeches are on the control panel. By the time George killed the Leeches, the Leech Man appears. He used the Blood Infusion Pack on the floor to distract him. Then he quickly return to the panel and input the code. They exited the room immediately and took the elevator to B2F. Then they went to the B2F Passway, took the last Blood Infusion Pack and went to the Fixed Temperature Experiment Room. The Leech Man appears and they spill the Blood Infusion Pack into the floor to distract the monster. Then they got to the safe chamber and set the controls to "High". The Leech Man dies from the intense heat.

Once the Leech Man dead, George set the temperature to "Low" and finds the Card Key Level 2. He used the Card Key to unlock the south door to the Underpass Entrance. They need a key for the padlock. After obtaining the Card Key Level 1 from the Examination Room in 1F, unlocking the south door in the BF1 Passway using the Card Key, and founded the Chain Key in the Waste Liquid Disposal Room, he remove the chain from the boat in the Underpass Entrance. The three got in the boat and he started it. Something was blocking, so they got out and the boat crashes. There was a massive Leech hive, along with the "Queen Leech". After defeating the Queen Leech, they escape the sewers.

"It's official, I hate insects and if that weren't enough, my cloths and shoes are ruined from trudging through this damn sewer. But I guess its a small price to pay for still being alive, wonder how long my luck going to last?

- Ending (Jim's perspective)

"If this is a sewer, then I should be able to follow it to the city limits. I'll keep walking, just focused on that hopeful thought, otherwise probably be consumed by fear, I should go one step at a time." - Ending (Cindy's perspective)

"Terror is our constant companion, it lurks in the shadows, ready to strike at any moment. Today it chose me, yet some how I kept it together in that suffocating hospital. I suppose I should be thankful for that." - Ending (George's perspective)

I'm a doctor in this hospital.
I must say this hospital is not an ideal place to take shelter.
Its not as safe as it may look or sound.
I myself have decided to get out of here as soon as possible.

Oh... sorry for surprising you.
I'm a doctor of this hospital.

Walkthrough

The scenario starts in Room 301. To gain points, the player can press a button between two beds to call the nurse station. Dr. Hersh will make his entry when the survivors attempt to leave. Since the elevator power is down, exploration of the hospital for the time being is restricted only to level 3F.

Moving through the 3F passage to Room 302, the acquisition of the Male Nurse's Diary can serve a guide to the plot. Should the player be unarmed, a Crutch can be found against the locker, while a Handgun will be inside. The Leech Man will come down one of the air ducts and will attack the player after said Handgun is picked up. It is strongly recommended, if unable to simply evade, for the player to use their new Crutch by attacking it and getting out of the room.

Again in the 3F passage, the player must go to the Nurse's Station. Inside the Nurse's Station the player can find several items such a Hospital's blue print that the character will memorize it and will obtain a Map (unless playing as George as he'll know the hospital), the Repair Work Memo. The player must move to the barricade where a short cutscene will play where Hersh will meet his final destiny by the hands of the Leech Man. After this cutscene, a nurse will reanimate as a Zombie and Hersh will be mysteriously missing along the Leech Man; the player now can go over the barricade to obtain a First Aid Spray(normal and easy modes), two very important Blood Infusion Packs and can use the elevator.

Now, the elevator will be working, however it will only head to the 1F, 2F and the B1F levels; the Rooftop and B2F are inaccessible. To unlock the B2F and the Rooftop, a player must input codes in the B1F Elevator Control Room. The code for B2F is randomly selected when the scenario starts, while the Rooftop passcode will always be 0930.

Unless you already know the possible B2F codes, head to 2F and go to the Nurse's Station; in addition to a Handgun, Handgun ammo, and two blood infusion packs, the glass cabinet contains leeches and (more importantly) the Chemical Code Message (which is crucial to finding the B2F elevator code). At the end of the 2F hallway is both a room with supplies, and a stairway down to the 1F passage, where they'll find a door with a shutter blocking it and an Iron Pipe near the stairs.. Go to Night Reception.

If the player has Mark, they can get the Security Guard Manual file, which is needed to earn a 100% competition rate and points.

Also, the back of this room, the player can find the Burst Handgun and an Unknown Survivor. If a player talks to him, it will ask for Hemostat, however once the player has one and returns, the Survivor will be dead ((Note: The Unknown Survivor will be sometimes in the Waste Liquid Disposal Room and dead at times the player arrives; Also in Hard and Very hard modes, the players wont find the Burst Handgun, but a simply Butcher's Knife.))

The console controls the power supply for all shutters on this floor. Turn on power to the the hospital shutters and enter the shutter at the base of the stairs. This leads to the hallway seen in Resident Evil 3.

The hallway: the Office and the Central Waiting Room. To find the other clue to the B2F elevator code (Piece of Memo), it lies in the Office's center island. The Central Waiting Room transitions to the Examination Room (take note that a Zombie Dog it encountered in the Waiting Room). The Examination Room is where the Keycard Level 1 is found, next to a dormant zombie.

If supplies are needed, the player can go to the Treatment Room (located in the bottom right of the Examination room) where they'll find Four Recovery Medicine Base (George only), a Hemostat and a Typewriter. Now exit the room and go to the upper part of the examination room passing down the windows, but a player must be cautious as a zombie will burst from the windows.

Alternately, the Examination Room can be reached through the Locker Room.

In any event, return to the elevator from either the stairs to 2F, or through the Office and to the Doctor's Station. This room contains the classic Blue Herb, an Anti Virus Large and Handgun ammo. You can use the elevator in this room to move to B1F.

On BF1, there are two rooms: The Reposing room, where the player will find a Typewriter, a Scurb Brush and a First Aid Spray; the other room is the player's destination, the Elevator Control Room. Inside of it, a player has to input two passcodes for the elevator in order to move on to the B2F and the Hospital's Rooftop. Inside the room, the player will find: the Setting Manual, and Leeches on the console to put the passcodes; it is recommended to put the Blood Infusion Packs on the floor to draw the leeches off the console, also distracting the Leech Man, if he is present. The Blood pack will slow down the enemies for a whole minute allowing the players to put one of the following passcodes.

Passwords
  1. 3555
  2. 5315
  3. 8211
  4. 0930 (Rooftop passcode)

After putting the right codes, the player must head to the elevator and get to B2F. As soon the player is on the B2F hallway, they shall go to the room across the B2F passage. In the room, they'll find the Researcher's Diary, the Investigation Request files and a freezer that has 2 Blood Infusion Packs. After picking any desired items, the players shall head to door near the dried up cadaver and enter the Fixed Temperature Experiment room where they will find a Hemostat. The Leech man will be your only encounter in this room. The player will have to lure it inside the main room with a Blood Pack. After doing so, the player must head outside that room and wait for the Leech Man to go for the bait. As soon the Leech Man does so, the player must set the temperature to 'High'. After a cutscene, the player will need to set the temperature to 'Low' in order for the Keycard Level 2 to be accessible to the players. If a player presses X on the Leech Man's corpse, they'll notice its true identity and if a player presses the AB-Lib, the characters will make comments on the Creature's identity.

Once the player has Keycard Level 2, it is recommended to go back the B2F and head down to the Hall's bottom, to the door where a Zombie resides (Take note that his zombie will never despawn) and use their keycard.

The player can go to the Rooftop to get supplies. On the roof, the player will find several Crows as well some Herbs (In Hard and Very Hard modes, zombies will be present in the rooftop, making it a dangerous room, and after a player calls the elevator, a zombie will come out the elevator attacking the player). One of the last Raccoon City Police Department officers is in the rooftop. If a player has Cindy or Kevin as a character, the Dying police officer will mistake Cindy with his special one "Maggie" and give her the MP5 and ammo for it as a parting gift. If the player has Kevin as the character, he will say that the last chopper left and just gives him the MP5 and dies(In Hard and Very Hard mode, the cop will give both characters the Burst Handgun with no ammo).

At any point in B1F, the player must head down the corridor and use the Keycard Level 1. As entering the South Passway, a zombie will be near the boilers as well an Iron Pipe (Note: the Leech Man and leeches will be absent in this room if already eliminated, however zombies will break in the room if the player stays too long). Head to the other end and reach the Waste Liquid Disposal Room where more leeches will be waiting for the player to come, near the door, the player will find a Green Herb.

The player must head down the stairs and grab the Handgun ammo and wade through the water until reaching the other side, where the Padlock Key is located. the player must be careful as the zombie could get the player and bite them. After obtaining the Padlock Key, the player must go back to B2F and go across the hallway to enter the Underpass Entrance. When the Key is used, a cutscene will play showing how the player unlocks the chain on the docked boat. In the Room, the player can find a First Aid and Hand Gun ammo. When ready, the player must check the Boat and get in it for the final boss battle.

Further notes

  • The Leech Zombie will haunt the players through every room via the ventilation system, regardless the difficulty, it wont be able to reach the rooftop. In easy and normal modes this would be the only "safe area" from the hospital. However in Hard and Very Hard difficulties, zombies will come from the elevator and the Crows will respawn every minute.
  • In Hard and Very Hard modes, if a player kills a leech, another will respawn and drop from the ceiling.
  • Only Cindy and Kevin will receive the Sub Machine gun from the Dying police officer; This weapon is recommended for the Giant Leech boss, as it will cause zero damage to the Leech Zombie (0HP), however in Hard and Very Hard modes, they will only receive a Burst Handgun instead.
  • Randomly, players will find an unidentified civilian within the hospital's installations. If players find him before getting the BF2 card, he will be alive and request an Hemostat to stop his bleeding. Regardless of whether the player tries to get him the medicine or not, he will be found dead if the player tries to talk to him again.
  • Of all the elevator's passcodes, the only one that won't ever change is the Rooftop pass code.
  • The diaries found in this scenario serve as items, taking space in the character's item slots, however they have no use and will be stored in the Files.
  • Melee weapons are recommended to be used in this scenario, leaving the fire weapons for the boss battle.
