The Mercenaries is a mini-game in Resident Evil 4 that can be unlocked by beating the main games once. There are four stages and five characters in all.
How to Play
Each stage in The Mercenaries are large, and the controls are the same. You must kill enemies to earn points before your evacuation chopper arrives in the alloted time. There are also a number of enemies you can kill in a row, which will earn you more points. There is also a "Bonus Time" pick-up, which will earn you 1,000 points times the number of enemies you killed in the 30-seconds of the Bonus Time, as well as a time extension. There is a "boss" in the game that will earn you many points if you neutralize him/her.
Unlockable Characters
Leon Scott Kennedy is the only character that you will use when you first unlock The Mercenaries. You must unlock a character in each stage with a 4-star ranking. Each character has certain weapons, ammo, abilities for some, and grenades.

- Jack Krauser: Castle
- HUNK: Island: Military Base
- Albert Wesker: Island: Water World
Bosses on each Stage
Each boss is difficult to defeat, and three of them can instantly kill you, with one of them inflicting tremendous damage.
- Village: The Bella Sisters
- Castle: Garrador
- Island: Military Base: J.J.
- Island: Water World: Super-Salvador
Each stage has the same enemies that are seen in the main game. Some paths in The Mercenaries, for example, the village, are blocked in the main game.
Other Unlockables
The Handcannon is unlocked when you get a 5-star ranking on every stage as every character. It may take some practice, but such a feat is very possible with enough effort.
