The Village Incident (tentative name) was a series of violent homicides, and which took place in a village situated in an Eastern European Mountain range from 9–10 February 2021. The exact numbers of casualties are still not known, although it appears to have resulted in the total extermination of the local population by their own friends and family who had been subjects to experimentation. The attacks were orchestrated by Mother Miranda, supreme ruler of the region's religious community, as a means of eliminating all threats to her "ceremony".

Over the course of the night, Miranda and her four lieutenants - the Four Lords - were each killed by Ethan Winters, an American mutant who was searching for his daughter, Rose. The Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) was involved in the clean-up attempts, although the North American Branch's efforts were limited with most work being accomplished by the Hound Wolf Squad under Cpt. Chris Redfield. The incident exposed massive corruption within the organization, both with the use of BSAA-approved B.O.W.s, and evidence indicating a mole in the BSAA leaked the Winters' location to Miranda.

Background[]

In the aftermath of the First World War, an isolated region of Eastern Europe fell under control of Mother Miranda, a superhuman afflicted by a DNA-assimilating fungus known as the "Mold". Over the next century, she used this fungus to brainwash the inhabitants, becoming adorned as a prophet of what she called the Black God, the core of the fungal super-colony which housed the assimilated consciousnesses of hundreds or even thousands of people since ages past.

Miranda, who lost her only daughter Eva to the Spanish flu, believed that by creating another superhuman she would have the perfect vessel for Eva's copied consciousness to possess. Hundreds of villagers were subjected to experimentation over the coming decades, with many becoming so-called "Lycans", hyper-aggressive mutant humans that had to be kept out of the village in order to keep the supply of test-subjects protected. Among the more adequate superhuman candidates were Alcina Dimitrescu, Donna Beneviento, Salvatore Moreau, and Karl Heisenberg who, as descendants of the Four Kings that founded the village, were each awarded a seat at Miranda's council as her lieutenants, the "Four Lords".

Likely to maintain this control, communication with the outside world was harshly discouraged in favor of self-reliance, and newspapers from the outside were not allowed. Radio equipment and motor-vehicles were in limited supply, leaving them cut-off from the outside world. Aside from The Duke, a merchant with connections to the region, few outsiders are known to have traveled in and out of the village without being killed. Among these was a representative of The Connections, a crime syndicate that had become aware of the Mold and acquired an embryonic clone of Eva for a B.O.W. project.

Miranda's search for a superhuman candidate was renewed in 2021, when she learnt of a BSAA leak which disclosed the name and address of Rosemary Winters, an American infant born to two mutants afflicted by the Mold in Louisiana by one of the Eva clones. Although she understood the risks that such a superhuman would pose to her plans, Miranda believed she was the best candidate possible. Having had over a century to study the Mold, Miranda believed triggering exponential growth in the fungus colony would give it sufficient strength to plant the Eva consciousness in Rose's body. Either by necessity or simply to tie-up loose ends, Miranda also planned to exterminate the entire population, starting with the peasantry and her Lords' employees, and finally the Lords themselves when the ceremony was ready. What Miranda did not account for, however, was that the BSAA had also obtained information on her as well.

Events[]

The Lycans' Attack[]

After stealing Rosemary from her father Ethan Winters and kidnapping her mother Mia, Miranda took Rosemary back to the village to prepare for the ceremony in using the Fungal Root to revive Eva in Rosemary's body. As they prepared for the ceremony, Rosemary was crystallized and split into four fragments, which each of the four lords receiving a flask of each part. With the Fungal Root needing sustenance to reach its full potential, Miranda ordered Heisenberg to lead the unleashed Lycans and other creatures to slaughter the villagers for themselves to feed on as well as provide more consumption to the Fungal Root, having no need of the villagers anymore after finding the perfect host for Eva.

Recovering from the crash that enabled Miranda to retrieve Rosemary, Ethan finds himself in the middle of the massacre. He finds himself injured and cornered by several of the Lycans, who leave him after they are called back by bells. Miranda meanwhile attempts to spy on Ethan and taunt him in her old hag form. Ethan manages to meet the village's remaining survivors in Luiza's House. One survivor, Leonardo, transforms into a Lycan and causes a fire which eliminates the rest of the survivors residing in the house, while Miranda personally kills caretaker Iulian before once again taunting Ethan in her hag form. Heisenberg captures Ethan and brings him before the four lords, who recognize him as Rosemary's father. After the four lords' squabble on who should kill Ethan, Miranda gives the honor to Heisenberg, who puts Ethan through several traps in the Lycans' stronghold. Ethan manages to outsmart these traps and escape the stronghold. He comes across the village's sole survivor, the merchant known as the Duke, who supplies him with weapons and medical supplies.

Having previously encountered Miranda, rogue BSAA captain Chris Redfield and the Hound Wolf Squad decide to infiltrate the village, setting up their base of operations in the village's church. They begin making studies on the nature of the village's Mold in comparison to the Dulvey Incident.

Ethan and the Four Lords[]

Ethan begins his search for Rosemary in Castle Dimitrescu, which at this point is more or less abandoned after its inhabitants have killed all their servants to drain their blood. Dimitrescu's daughters Bela, Cassandra, and Daniela capture Ethan and bring him to Dimitrescu, who plans to give him the same fate that befalls the other victims of the castle. Ethan instead manages to escape, seeking shelter at the Duke's station in the castle. He manages to kill Bela, Cassandra, and Daniela after discovering their weakness to cold air, although he learns from an enraged Dimitrescu that Rosemary is not in the castle. Dimitrescu mutates into a large monstrous form after Ethan stabs her with the Dagger of Death's Flowers. As they battle, Ethan emerges victorious and kills Dimitrescu before retrieving her flask. As he exits the castle, he meets Miranda again in her hag form. Miranda leaves him with the Unborn Key used to access the other lords, having decided to observe Ethan for also being someone affected by the Mold.

Ethan heads to the village's altar where he encounters the Duke again, who explains to him Miranda, the four lords, and the flasks containing Rosemary's parts. After retrieving another part of the key in the village, Ethan begins his journey to retrieve the other flasks with his daughter from the other lords. Meanwhile, Chris and Hound Wolf begin exploring other parts of the village, where they would make more tests on the Mold and report their findings. They would also set up a base of testing in Moreau's reservoir.

Ethan heads to House Beneviento next, where he is subjected to hallucinations and mental torture from Beneviento's chemicals before managing to kill Beneviento and retrieve her flask. He travels to the reservoir next and retrieves Moreau's flask, although this leads to a chase between Ethan and Moreau's monstrous form. Ethan stumbles upon Chris and Hound Wolf's base in the reservoir, though their tense confrontation is short-lived when Moreau attacks the base in pursuit of Ethan. After draining the flooded village to weaken Moreau, Ethan kills him and leaves the reservoir.

Realizing Ethan's abilities and Rosemary's potential power, Heisenberg begins forming a plan to recruit Ethan to join his rebellion. He contacts Ethan through a television in Moreau's hideout and invites him to prove his worth by returning to the Lycan stronghold to fight his way through. Ethan is victorious and retrieves Heisenberg's flask, which unlocks the Giant's Chalice, which unlocks the entry to Heisenberg's factory under the ceremonial site. Heisenberg offers Ethan to join him, but Ethan rejects him when he says he will use Rosemary as a weapon to kill Miranda. Heisenberg leaves Ethan to die in the factory, while Chris and Hound Wolf also enter the factory to investigate it and eventually destroy it. Although Ethan manages to reach the exit, Heisenberg mutates and throws Ethan down his factory yet again where he encounters Chris. Chris finally explains Miranda and her plan to Ethan and provides him with a metal-polymer tank he could use to face Miranda. Ethan instead encounters Heisenberg, who he defeats while Chris destroys the factory.

The Final Battle[]

With the rebellion quelled and the four lords disposed indirectly through Ethan, Miranda appears to him and explains her plan to use Rosemary as a vessel to revive Eva. Having no use for him anymore, she rips out his heart and leaves him to die. As she begins the ritual at the ceremonial site, the village is consumed by giant tendrils of Mold surge from the ground, engulfing buildings as fire spreads across the ruins. Seizing the opportunity, the BSAA launches an assault, deploying bioweapons to battle Miranda’s forces but their efforts are unsuccessful. Regretful over not informing Ethan sooner and determined to avenge him, Chris leads Hound Wolf to battle Miranda's army and incapacitate any BSAA forces in their way. With the fight leading to an underground opening, Chris ventures alone and finds the Fungal Root, which has grown larger in size. He plants an N2 bomb to destroy the Fungal Root alongside the village, but refrains from detonating it until Miranda is dead by his hands. Pressing deeper, Chris uncovers Miranda’s laboratory, where journals and notes reveal her history and obsession with reviving her daughter Eva. Among the evidence, he finds and rescues the real Mia, alive but imprisoned.

Ethan is found and rescued by the Duke, his body barely held together by the regenerative power of the Mold. Knowing Ethan’s determination, the Duke takes him to the ceremonial site, warning he is on borrowed time. Ethan arrives just as Miranda finishes the ceremony. Yet the ceremony does not go as planned, rather than Eva, it is Rosemary who returns to life and Miranda slowly drained of her powers. Ethan, with help from Chris, and Miranda clash over Rosemary, with the former emerging victorious as Miranda calcifies and Ethan recovers Rosemary. With Miranda's loss however, Ethan's Mold begins to deteriorate. Chris rescues Ethan and drags him to the rescue helicopter. What remains of Miranda in the Root merges with the Fungal Root in a larger, berserk-like form and pursues them. Knowing he will not make it; Ethan takes the detonator from Chris, and Chris brings Rosemary to a rescue helicopter with Mia. Ethan detonates the N2 bomb, destroying himself, Miranda, the Fungal Root, and most of the village, putting an end to Miranda's century-long reign of terror.

Aftermath[]

Following the Village incident, Rose is placed in protective custody by the US government, and is raised by Mia, now a widower. Rose is deemed to be a national security risk to the US, and seen as valuable tool for international bio-weapons developers. Rose and Mia were regular checked in by Redfield and his comrades. However, in 2037, Rose was mostly under the protection of federal agents, and Mia no longer had a regular presence in her life. By the age of 16, Rose's abilities were becoming of interest as an asset, with federal government and Redfield taking interest in recruiting her, though she declines due to the work she witness Redfield putting his Hound Wolf Squad through.

During BSAA's assault on the Village, a piece of the Fungal Root was recovered and placed under research in a US government lab, and is continued as far as 2037. A piece of Miranda's consciousness is stored inside the root, and begin to renew her goal of resurrecting Eva. However, her efforts proved futile, leading to her needed to lure Rose to the Realm of Consciousness by manipulating its quorum sensing abilities. Unbeknownst to Miranda, a copy of Ethan and Eveline's consciousness would also be stored and began to actively worked against her separately when Rose is lured to its realm by Miranda.
