Treasure chests appear throughout the games, and various items can be found inside, ranging from healing items to ammo and even weapons. In later games, they may contain treasures, as well. In Resident Evil 5, opening some treasure chests can also trigger the activation of traps.

In Resident Evil 4 remake, treasure chests contains valuable treasures that can discovered in hidden locations throughout the Village, Castle and The Island. Treasure Map can be acquired from the Merchant by trading Spinels. Some treasure chests also contains key item to progress further the game.

In the Mercenaries mini-game of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, treasure chests contain a "Bonus Time" hourglass - an item which provides a certain amount of time in which to kill enemies to achieve larger scores.

They're also present in Resident Evil 6, containing Skill Points as well as ammo and healing items.
