(Welcome to Raccoon City continuity)
"What are you doing out hitchhiking on a night like this, eh? Oh right, looking for your brother, you said. Used to live here, you said. Raccoon City, better you than me." — The Trucker to Claire Redfield. |
The Trucker (died October 1, 1998) was unnamed freight truck driver who was caught up in the 1998 Raccoon City Destruction Incident. He may have been a local, judging by his Arklay County license plate and rural midwestern accent. He was travelling alongside his dog, which he didn't have insurance for.[1]
Biography[]
On the night of September 30, 1998, he was hauling a shipment when he stumbled across Claire Redfield hitchhiking in the rain along the road. He offered her a ride to Raccoon City.
A short while into the pair's trip, Redfield awoke suddenly from a nightmare, startling the driver. He then returned to conversing about the town, which he derided and mocked while eating a burger. Redfield ignored the driver in annoyance, changing the radio station as he continued to ramble. The trucker then attempted to advance on her, becoming distracted and unintentionally hitting a zombified woman that had wandered out into the middle of the road.
Concerned, Redfield and the trucker exited the vehicle to check if the woman was okay, only for Redfield to discover that she had been killed. Overwrought, the driver threw a fit about the incident exclaiming that it wasn't his fault, while Redfield had tried to convince him that they needed to wrap up the body and bring it into town, in the meantime, the woman vanished, leaving behind an only a trace amount of gore, which his dog proceeded to lick at, infecting the canine with the T-Virus. Redfield insisted that they go after the woman, but the trucker insisted on "getting the hell out of here".
Sometime thereafter, Redfield and the trucker arrived in town. As Redfield grabbed her bag to leave, he questioned if the woman just wasn't injured as bad as they thought. Redfield shrugged off his question and thanked him for the ride. After she left, the trucker took notice of his dog showing several signs of illness and contracted the virus himself after being severely bitten.
Two hours later, the trucker succumbed the infection while on the road, swerving recklessly down the street and nearly hitting Redfield's motorbike before colliding with several vehicles, tilting over, and crashing into the front gates of the Raccoon Police Station. Shortly thereafter, the oil in the tanker ignited, resulting in a massive fireball that drew the attention of several zombies to the blaze in front of the station.
The zombified trucker managed to escape from the wreckage, and while completely inflamed, wandered into the main hall of the police station and approached Leon S. Kennedy who had been passed out at the front desk listening to a walkman. Leon was then saved by Brian Irons who disposed of the trucker with a single headshot. His corpse was then extinguished by Leon, who reflected on it later in disbelief.
Further notes[]
- The Trucker may have been from/based in Benson, Arizona as he wears a cap naming the city. However, the design of the hat suggests this more likely a homage by director Johannes Roberts to the opening credits of John Carpenter's debut film Dark Star, as Welcome to Raccoon City was inspired by several early Carpenter films including Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog.
