He became obsessed with researching his discovery, the t-Virus, a viral weapon derived from leeches, performing his experiments on living human test subjects from within the confines of the Umbrella Executive Training Center. Eventually, Spencer ordered his old colleague's death. A two-man team entered Dr. Marcus' lab and shot him.

In July 1998, the U.S.S. Delta Team was given orders to investigate the Ecliptic Express, a train carrying Umbrella person, where the passengers were killed as part of a series of coordinated attacks on Umbrella property in the Arklay Mountains which wiped out the first and second investigation units . Delta Team restarted the train to take it to its intended destination, the Umbrella Executive Training Center, but were immediately after set upon be leeches under the control of the Queen Leech.

Later that year, in September, Umbrella became concerned over Dr. William Birkin's development of the G-virus, a muta genic toxin set to replace the t-Virus. Intent on selling the virus over to the U.S. Government for military applications, the U.S.S. was quickly called in to Raccoon City to intervene in any proceedings. On September 20, police officer Carl Nielson filed a report after encountering an individual skulking through the sewers. Although unable to catch up to the man to question him, Officer Nielson did stumble onto military-grade weaponry such as C4 plastic explosives with a detonator, and a broken infra-red scope for customizing firearms.

Not long after, the four-man "Alpha Team", lead by "HUNK", trapped Birkin in his lab. Although ordered to take in William Birkin and retrieve a sample of the virus, U.S.S. agent J. Martinez gunned down Dr. William Birkin after Birkin resisted. They subsequently left with only the samples of the G-Virus (HUNK is actually seen here calling in the success of the mission). Leaving in a hurry to avoid detection, the team failed to notice Birkin carrying another sample of "G". Injecting it into himself, he revived himself from near death and mutated into a frightening monster ready to enact his revenge. Several U.S.S. teams in the sewers, composed of at least eight men, were swiftly executed by the renegade doctor, with HUNK barely escaping alive. Stranded in the city for a week, HUNK finally made his way out of the sewers on September 30 and escaped the city via the Raccoon Police Station's front gate.

Several U.S.S. teams in the sewers, composed of at least eight men, were torn apart by Birkin, with HUNK being the only member of the team to escape with his life. Stranded in the city for a week, HUNK eventually made his way out of the sewers on September 30 and escaped the city via helicopter extraction.

On the last day of the outbreak, the 2nd U.S.S. Squad was tasked with removing the experimental weapon Nyx from the city, operating from Main Street. The commander, Rodriguez, went rogue and attempted to steal the bio-weapon instead and offered refuge to a rouge researcher named Linda and a few survivors aiding her. A UBCS team under the command of Arnold and under the supervision of Umbrella Executive Tommy Neilson was dispatched to kill him and retrieve the stolen B.O.W. Despite the nearby area being mined, Rodriguez escaped by helicopter, but lost Nyx in the process. The rest of the squad was killed and scattered around the nearby area as zombies sometime before these events.

The Umbrella Security Service (abbreviated "U.S.S.") was an elite special task force under the control of Umbrella Headquarters. Agents were trained at the Rockfort Island Military Training Center.[1]

History

The U.S.S. was formed at an unspecified date sometime in the 1970s or 1980s, and was placed under the control of Umbrella HQ, with a training regimine based on Rockfort Island (at least between 1994 and 1998). Their earliest known mission took place in 1988, when Dr. Oswell E. Spencer gave orders for his fellow co-founder, Dr. James Marcus, to be assassinated.[2] The two had become distrustful of one another since the founding of Umbrella Pharmaceuticals and, as the company expanded, Marcus became isolated.

Delta Team was given orders to investigate the Ecliptic Express. This train was carrying Umbrella personnel who were supposed to support an investigation being conducted into the Executive Training Center (following behind a team which had already arrived), but instead the transport was overrun with leeches carrying the t-Virus while en route to its destination. This turned out to be part of a series of coordinated attacks on Umbrella property in the Arklay Mountains. Delta Team restarted the train in order to reach the Executive Training Center, but were immediately set upon by leeches and killed.

Later that year, in September, Umbrella became concerned with Dr. William Birkin's development of the G-virus, a mutagenic toxin set to replace the t-Virus. Intent on selling the virus to the U.S. Government, which saw an opportunity to use it for military applications, the U.S.S. was rapidly called in to Raccoon City to intervene. On September 20, police officer Carl Nielson filed a report after encountering an individual skulking through the sewers. Although unable to catch up to the suspect to question him, Officer Nielson did stumble onto military-grade hardware and weaponry which had been abandoned, such as C4 plastic explosives with a detonator, and a broken infra-red scope for customizing firearms.[3] This equipment was seized by the police and stored as evidence.

Not long after this, the four-man "Alpha Team", lead by "HUNK", trapped Dr. Birkin in his lab. Although ordered to take William Birkin alive and retrieve a sample of the virus, U.S.S. agent J. Martinez gunned down Birkin after the scientist resisted. The team subsequently left with a case containing samples of both the G-Virus and the t-Virus. Leaving quickly to avoid detection, the team failed to notice that Birkin had a vial of "G" on his person. Injecting it into himself, he suddenly mutated into a powerful creature with a need for vengeance.

The commander, Rodriguez, went rogue and attempted to steal the bio-weapon instead, offering refuge to a rouge researcher named Linda and a few survivors aiding her. A UBCS team under the command of Arnold and supervised by Umbrella Executive Tommy Neilson was dispatched to kill Rodriguez and retrieve the stolen B.O.W. Despite the nearby area being mined, Rodriguez escaped by helicopter, but lost Nyx in the process. The rest of the U.S.S. squad members were killed or became zombies

The last known official deployment of the U.S.S. was in November 1998, when a small team lead by HUNK was assigned to transport a container to Rockfort Island. Despite its apparent simplicity, the mission was controversial, in that Alfred Ashford, the base commander on the island, did not reveal to the team exactly what was inside the crate. HUNK was concerned about the danger of an unidentified package that could have put him and the rest of his unit in jeopardy, and he would later express these misgivings to Ashford in writing.

During the December 1998 attack on Rockfort Island by agents associated with a rival organization, Umbrella Special Forces trainees were caught up in the fighting, with those who weren't killed being infected by the t-Virus.[notes 1]
