The Verdugo, Spanish for "Executioner", were B.O.W.s created by Los Illuminados for the purpose of serving as personal bodyguards for Ramon Salazar.

Characteristics

Re4 verdugo

A Verdugo under its cloak

The Verdugos are at first unseen; their forms hidden under long red and black cloaks that bore Los Illuminados' insignia. Their faces, however, were seen to be clearly inhuman, having shimmering red eyes and large mandibles, and their hands having only two long, spindly fingers with one opposable thumb. Later, when one was sent to hunt down Leon, it discarded its cloak to reveal a thin, insectoid body, covered in a black exoskeleton and having a long, segmented tail. As it tracked Leon, it would occasionally attack by thrusting its tail through the floor or ceiling grate.

The verdugo is a tall, thin and powerful B.O.W. armed with a long, sharp tail, which serves as a deadly weapon. Its carapace is highly damage-resistant to the extent that it can survive a direct hit from a rocket launcher with little damage done to it, though it can be rendered temporarily brittle by exposure to liquid nitrogen. If shot by a rocket launcher while in this state, the verdugo will shatter into pieces. Although the other Verdugo is not fought directly, it presumably shares similar physical characteristics.

The Verdugo also seem to possess very high intelligence, both showing the capability of restraint and violence. The Verdugo is capable of sneaking around and attacking its prey out of sight like a well trained monster, and demonstrates the ability to not only walk upright, but swing its arms back and forth while running, a trait found only in human beings. Verdugo demonstrates the capacity to take orders and contains high levels of comprehension. A very good example can be seen when it grabs the knife in Salazar's hand, throwing it back at Leon not only with pinpoint accuracy, but while using two fingers and with the blade aimed at Leon. The Verdugo does not appear to possess a thumb on either hand, but is capable of using its third claw in a similar fashion. The Verdugo also seem to stand very patiently and uniformly during several appearances.

History

2nd Verdugo

The "black-cloaked" Verdugo when it fused together with Ramon Salazar

The Verdugo were created by fusing human and insect DNA together, and then making them hosts of Las Plagas.[1] Two verdugo, presumably the only two in existence, served as Ramon Salazar's personal bodyguards.

When Leon survived a booby trap, Salazar sent his red-cloaked verdugo to personally kill him, cornering Leon in the sewers under the castle. The black-cloaked verdugo later fused with Salazar and the Queen Plaga to fight Leon.

Moveset and tactics

Leon can confront the red-cloacked verdugo in the sewers directly or simply attempt to flee from it. If killed, it drops a crown jewel which can be combined with the crown to sell for around 24,000 pesetas (the selling price is doubled for the crown if the royal insignia is also combined with it). During the battle, the player can knock over the red liquid nitrogen canisters scattered about the area to freeze the creature and render it temporarily vulnerable for a few seconds. After that, the Verdugo will break out of its nitrogen casing and return to normal again, and the player will need to knock over another canister to weaken its defenses.

It is believed to have the equivalent of around 900 health points, making it one of the more robust enemies in the game. When the Verdugo is frozen, the damage that you inflict onto it is tripled. When this happens, a single, direct hit from an RPG will kill it. As a direct RPG hit causes 300 damage, it is fair to assume that Verdugo has 900 health. It can be killed via accumulating the equivalent with other weapons, and although possible, this feat will require a lot of ammo. It is advised that you save the RPG you acquire from the weapons' cabinet on a earlier chapter for this fight. Alternatively, you can dispose of Verdugo with the Handcannon or Chicago Typewriter without the need for liquid nitrogen. An instant kill can be obtained by freezing it with the liquid nitrogen, kicking it away, and using a rocket launcher; it will shatter into tiny pieces. You can also kill it with one fully charged shot from the P.R.L. 412 with or without the liquid nitrogen. The reward for killing the Verdugo is a missing jewel of the Salazar Family Crown.

This boss can also be skipped, as the elevator that Leon is forced to wait for can arrive midway during the battle, allowing Leon to board and escape from Verdugo before having to finish it off. The game, however, assumes you do kill him, as he never appears in any subsequent appearances with Salazar regardless of being dead or alive. Unlike most bosses, the Verdugo is still there if you decide to go back after not killing it.

Trivia

  • When hit with a rocket launcher it then tauntingly wags its finger at Leon.
  • The Verdugo's body highly resembles that of the Xenomorphs from the Alien series, while its mandibles are oddly similar to that of the Yautja species from the Predator films. Because of these similarities, the Verdugo may have been based on; or could perhaps be an homage to the two starring creatures from the Aliens vs. Predator movie that was also released in 2004.
  • Even though Leon doesn't always seem that intimidated or fearful of even the most horrifying creatures (like Mendez or El Gigante) this is the one boss where he does seem to be afraid a bit because if you examine the elevator before it has arrived, Leon will say "C'mon c'mon!" as in that he wants to get out of the room and away from the Verdugo as soon as possible.
  • It is unknown if the Verdugos were also mass produced like the El Gigantes and the Novistadors as only two were encountered throughout the game.
  • Aside from Chief Mendez, U-3, Krauser, and Saddler, unless you freeze it using liquid nitrogen, the Verdugo is the only other enemy encountered that can survive a full-on blast with a Rocket Launcher and not die (probably because the strong armor around the Verdugo's body).
