"This is my life's work. I'm not giving it to anybody."
— Birkin discussing the G-Virus

Dr. William Birkin (died October 1, 1998) was an Umbrella Corporation scientist who lived in Raccoon City and was responsible for overseeing the experiments on children from the Subject Harvesting Facility, including Lisa Trevor and twins Alexia & Alfred Ashford, as well as the creation of the G-Virus.[1]

History[]

At some point in the 80s, Lisa Trevor managed to escape from her containment in the NEST facility underneath Raccoon City and escape to the orphanage above. This spiked the attention of the orphaned Claire Redfield, whose curiosity proved risky to Birkin. As such, Birkin selected Claire to be their next test subject but she managed to escape and left town sometime after. In the years following, Birkin became something of a father-figure to her elder brother Chris, helping him to get into the academy and become a well-respected officer of the Raccoon City Police Department.

In 1998, Birkin, his wife and daughter were caught up in the Raccoon City Destruction Incident. Having received an urgent phone call, Birkin hurried his family into their vehicle and made his way to his NEST lab located under the Spencer Mansion in order to retrieve the samples of the G-Virus and prevent it from getting into the hands of the U.S.S. or a third party.

After arriving at his lab, Birkin rushed to secure the vials. Not long after, Birkin and his family were encountered by Albert Wesker, who had been hired to obtain any leftover Umbrella research from the NEST facility. When Birkin refused to hand over his creation, Wesker threatened Birkin at gunpoint. Birkin conceded, before taking notice of his own weapon behind the vial case and shooting Wesker, only to be shot several times himself.

Mortally wounded, William begged his wife to grab the vials and handed her his gun to defend herself and Sherry. Unfortunately, Wesker ended up disposing of her as well. Wesker, bewildered and guilt-ridden, grabbed hold of the dying Birkin who laughed, revealing that he had injected himself with the G-Virus. In disbelief, Wesker fired several more shots directly into Birkin at point-blank range, but even this would only temporarily slow his imminent mutation.

Moments later, Birkin was restored to life and began mutating at an exponential rate. The deranged Birkin ended up coming into conflict with Chris and Claire Redfield before being temporarily neutralized by the former. However, this only furthered his mututation into a mindless inhuman monstrosity. After attacking the ALC-5000, Birkin was finally terminated by Leon S. Kennedy.[2]
