The wrench is a tool that is found in various Resident Evil games. First appearing in Resident Evil 3, Jill Valentine can find the wrench in the cable car while exploring downtown Raccoon City. She must first use the wrench to dislodge a fire hose from the wall in an alleyway, which is later required to clear out a fire. She must also use the wrench at the Stagla Gas Station after the rusted crank's handle breaks apart in the crank hole. The wrench is used to finish opening the shutter to the gas station. Once Jill completes the above two tasks, she will no longer have any use for the wrench and will be asked to discard it.

The wrench returns in the Resident Evil Outbreak series as a weapon. During the outbreak in Raccoon City, David King used these tools as weapons to defend himself and others from mutated creatures. David starts every scenario with 12 of these items. He will throw them at enemies, taunting or knocking down most enemies. Once a player uses all of them, they cannot be replenished and his special ability can no longer be used. They can be considered good weapons against bosses as they deal 250HP of damage. The Feral, Stalker, Thanatos and Gigabite enemies take 200% damage if hit with these.

Trivia

 • AI David (and David-type characters) will rarely use these. The most common occurrence is when they're surrounded by a large group of zombies.
 • In Resident Evil Outbreak File 1, it can taunt zombies, causing them fall to the ground for a short amount of time, allowing the player to escape.
