The Yawn was a snake-based B.O.W. that lurked around in the Spencer Mansion. It was nicknamed "Yawn" by the Arklay Laboratory team in reference to the way its mouth opens before attacking, which resembled a yawn.[2][excerpt 1]

History

In early 1998, the Yawn was one of many test subjects bred specifically as experimental B.O.W.s. The specimen escaped however, and managed to avoid recapture by the scientists in the Arklay Laboratory. It was eventually infected with the t-Virus following the leak in May 1998, and it promptly made the mansion its home, preying on any humans that happened to come across it.

The Yawn encountered S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team members Richard Aiken and Rebecca Chambers as they explored the mansion, hunting them through individual rooms until it cornered them. After Richard managed to save Rebecca from harm, the Yawn attacked and bit into Richard before escaping back into the Mansion's framework. Bleeding and injected with a large dose of venom, Richard and Rebecca hid until they were discovered by S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team members Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine.

The Yawn was later fought in the attic, but escaped through a fireplace before it could be killed. The Yawn would later attack one of the S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team members in the library, where it was finally killed.

Biology

From the accomplished research, the specimen proved that serpentine B.O.W.s were unfit for production. The specimen earned the nickname "Yawn" as it gave the appearance of yawning as it dislocates its lower jaw when ready to consume its prey. The size of this 'yawn' and its esophagus made it easily capable of swallowing a human, whole.[2][excerpt 2]

The most noticeable aspect of its t-Virus infection was its enormous size, large enough to swallow a human being whole. It also proved to retain its predator intellect, easily able to stalk and attack its prey before they even realized it. However, the Yawn exhibited examples of uncoordinated mutations, as its size became greatly inconsistent with its length, and its body became covered with various sores and tumors.

The potency of its venom was also significantly enhanced, requiring a specially-formulated serum to counteract it. Its venom could quickly immobilize a human being in minutes, and would kill the victim shortly afterward if left untreated.

Differences between games

In the Nintendo DS version of Resident Evil, a second Yawn is discovered upon returning to Point 42 (formerly occupied by Plant 42), this second one having developed hardened scales. In all versions, if the player gets bitten by Yawn, the only way to heal is by using the serum. Unfortunately, blue herbs don't work against its poison.

In Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Yawn is fought in the Nightmare 2 chapter by Rebecca Chambers and Richard Aiken, and as the final boss of the Mansion Incident 1 chapter by Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield. The attic battle is omitted; the battle will always take place in the library. Both battles are exactly the same, except Yawn will chase Jill and Chris up onto the balcony, while in Rebecca and Richard's battle the Yawn will slither up to the balcony itself and attack you from above.

Further notes

The pre-release versions of Resident Evil had the Yawn appear in the supply room before the courtyard, ending the trial.
